In most organizations, enrichment is the most important dimenstion to develop an Environmental Management System. Enrichment means that an EMS develops by eventually covering more and more of the fields of the organization’s activities, which are (directly or indirectly) linked to environmentally harmful flows of material and energy. Main fields in pracitce are in-house processes, products, services, staff, and internal and external communication activities. Due to the large number of starting points which are provided by the concept of Eco-Design for ecologically sound product development, products are a major field of action for many companies – and seemingly one of the most unerdeveloped ones. The ecologically relevant behaviour of employees can be improved by measures of sensitization, by the introduction of specific incentives and by knowledge-development. The main potentials in internal and external communication can be found in the field of customer- and market-information and in the interaction of an organization with its relevant interest groups.
