Hi there,
I seem to be the first one to use this forum - hope to get an answer anyway.
Can anyone tell me what is the different between direct and indirect issues in environmental management?
Thanks in advance - Tran

Hello Tran,
let me try it in simple terms: Direct aspects are environmental issues which occur from your own processes and products, like your water consumption, your energy use, your waste. Indirect aspects occur also from your decisions, but they occur outside your system boundaries, i.e. the energy consumption for the pre-production of raw material, or a suppliers truck-emissions for bringing half products to your premises.
Sounds a bit complicated, but I hope it helped anyway.
Cheers, bente

Just an example: If you burn coal for process heat, it's a direct environmental aspect. If you buy power (electricity) from a power plant which burns coal in order to gain the electricity, those emissions are an indirect environmental aspect from your point of view.

Thank you all for help.
Seams pretty simple. But I was told that power is direct issue. So have I to calculae coal emissions as indirect issue anyway then? - tran

Hello,
Power is handled differently by many. Some regard electricity (which is not self-produced) as direct issues, others do not. I look at it as indirect issues because we can switch supplier but not change production.
