Green IT: Unknown and Underestimated
You are sitting in front of your computer, looking for ideas to improve your environmental performance? Well, look deep into your monitor, and let the chips, streams n'busses work! Did you know that computing is one of the top energy consuming application on this planet?
In 2008, companies worldwide spent roughly 30 Billion USD for electrical power and cooling systems to run their IT equipment. This huge sum will even grow significantly in the future. Predictions forsee a rise of more then 50 per cent in the next two years. See the red light blinking?
So it's time to look at your own computer's power consumption. It's a fairy tale that E-Mails carry a lower environmental burden than snailmail.
There are IT-Businesses which are more aware of these problems than others. IBM, for example, runs an efficient power reduction program in a variety of fields of action. Others, such as internet-providers, at least run their systems using green power resources. Still others build very efficient hardware, avoiding standby mode and overheating motherboards.
That's all not more than a beginning, but for us, looking for options for CIP, it's a way to start of with higher IT-efficiency in a natural sense.
